Export problem
Stickers and captions separate from the photos
In Snapchat, your photo had its caption, its sticker, its drawing. In the export, the photo arrives bare, and what you added on top arrives next to it, as a transparent image.
Updated October 2026
What the export contains
For every edited memory, Snapchat delivers two files: the original photo or video, and a transparent PNG overlay with the stickers, captions and drawings. Your gallery shows them separately: a photo without its caption, and an almost empty image. In a real export of 1,720 memories, 313 had a separate overlay like this.
The fixes
- By hand
- Lay the overlay over the photo in an app that handles transparency (Preview, Photoshop, GIMP, Canva), photo by photo. For a video, you need a video editor.
- A script
- With ImageMagick for photos and FFmpeg for videos, after matching each overlay with its photo.
- Rembobino
- It finds each memory's overlay and puts it back, on photos and videos, exactly as in Snapchat. The memory keeps its date, local time and place. On iPhone, Mac or Windows; on iPhone and Mac, with no duplicates of what Snapchat already put in Photos. The free trial restores 250 memories, then €5.99 once.
Every option, side by side: the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Are the original photos, without stickers, lost?
No: they stay in your .zip files, which we recommend you keep.
What about split videos?
Rembobino also joins the pieces of long videos, stickers included: see split videos.
